R. Zalee & The Meors

In a fictional Malaysian town in the swinging 1960s, four young Malay musicians chase their dream of becoming Malaya's biggest Pop Yeh Yeh band: R. Zalee, the charming but overconfident lead singer; Meor Mat, the cheeky guitarist armed with a sarcastic comeback for everything; Meor Din, the laid-back bassist whose offhand remarks turn out to be unexpectedly wise; and Meor Lan, the impulsive drummer who can turn a quiet afternoon into chaos. Each episode sends them through ridiculous misunderstandings, failed romances, kampung gossip, bossy gig organisers and smug rival bands, all in the setting of kopitiams, shophouses, record shops and vintage stages. Their fast-paced banter, in natural Bahasa Melayu full of local slang, teasing and awkward silences, grounds the humour in Malaysian life rather than American sitcom formulas. Between the mishaps, the band performs original Pop Yeh Yeh songs, and their loyal friendship keeps them together as they try to make it big. Rendered in bold, colourful 2D animation with exaggerated expressions and vintage 1960s style, the show is lighthearted, mischievous, nostalgic and occasionally absurd.
