[dramatic music] [sighs] [machine powers down] [gentle music] [dramatic music] [gentle music] [static] Tonight we're discussing emotional regulation, which I personally regulate extremely well. You screamed at the printer this morning. [printer whirring] Moving rapidly forward. [button clicks] [projector whirring] Healthy emotional regulation means experiencing an emotion without letting it control everything you do. [audience applauds] Or you could simply decide everything is fine. Our expert has arrived. [audience applauds] [chair creaks] [sighs] [footsteps approaching] [chair crashes] Much better. Good evening. Mr. Fine believes emotional distress can be resolved through one simple mental adjustment. [gasps] No, he doesn't. I do. [light bulb buzzes] Right. Somehow that was worse. [panting] Walk us through your process. When an unpleasant emotion arrives, I acknowledge it. Then I tell it everything is fine. Then I stop acknowledging it. That's repression. Is it? Yes. Fine. [audience laughs] [dramatic music] Emotions don't disappear because you refuse to engage with them. Mine do. [table rattling] Your table is shaking. It's enthusiastic. [table crashes] [objects clattering] [screams] [panting] Very enthusiastic. Unprocessed emotion tends to emerge somewhere else. I think the desk is processing something. Stop it encouraging it! [audience applauds] [phone ringing] [panting] [footsteps] [phone ringing] [dramatic music] [gasps] Maya. Hello? Everything is definitely fine. I hate this episode. [panting] [rumbling] And yet... No. No. Absolutely not. [phone ringing] [dramatic music] At what point would you consider something not fine? I try not to catastrophize. The room is leaving! That does complicate the floor plan. [audience murmuring] Emotional regulation isn't pretending everything feels good. You can acknowledge discomfort without surrendering to it. So sometimes things aren't fine? [building crashes] Careful. I think you cured the building. Emotional regulation means making room for uncomfortable feelings instead of pretending they aren't happening. Exactly. [sighs] I still think everything is fine. [audience applauds] But completely fine. [audience murmurs] No. [static] [dramatic sound]
