[owl hoots] [gentle music] Out here, the desert doesn't sleep. It listens. [fire crackles] Every radio station has its moments of dead air. Tonight's caller believes someone has been using those empty spaces to speak back. Lines are open, folks. Whatever you've got, I'm listening. Jack, don't answer line four. Line four. You're on "The Witching Hour." Who am I speaking with tonight? My name's Michelle. I work nights dispatching emergency calls, and I don't think the people calling me are alive anymore. Do the calls leave a number? No, they last exactly 17 seconds. No recording survives afterward, but I remember every word. Calls come in from people who went missing years ago. They never scream. They never ask for help. They only ask, "What year is it?" Did you ever answer them? Once. I told one caller it was 1993. What did the caller say back? One man whispered, "We're close, but nobody ever looks up." Another told me, "The towers aren't transmitting, they're receiving." I've had calls like this before. People vanished near the old Black Ridge radio relay tower 60 years. No bodies, no explanation. Could be a connection. The last disappearance, 1989. The caller's name was Michelle. Jack, when they ask what year it is, don't tell them. Radio is meant to bridge impossible distances. If you ever hear a voice asking what year it is, don't answer. This is "Strange Waves."
